As a part of the Cooperative Program of the Southern Baptist Convention, missions has always been an important part of Underwood Baptist Church. It is our heart that we not only spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to our community, but work with various organizations around the world to share the Gospel with the ends of the earth. Below are some ministries you can personally get involved in. If you have any questions about any of these or would like to volunteer, feel free to give us a call at the church office.

Jerusalem

New in 2008!

Food Closet

Often we have people stop by the church needing food, especially in the winter months. This ministry allows us to meet their need immediately with a few bags of groceries. There is a food closet container located in the hallway adjacent to the fellowship hall near the counting room where you may drop off non-perishable items at anytime to help support this ministry.

Food Pantry

This ministry has been established to help people in our community who are in need of assistance on a consistent basis. Each applicant is interviewed to determine eligibility. Food is distributed on the third Tuesday of every month from 2-3:00 pm. Volunteers are needed each month to help collect food and assist in distribution.

Christmas Blessing

Each year we receive several phone calls from families who cannot provide gifts for their children at Christmas. If you are interested in helping a family, you can call the church office during the designated time to volunteer and purchase gifts for a child who would otherwise get little to nothing for Christmas.

Meals On Wheels

This is a program that is organized and directed by the Community Action Agency in Florence, AL. Each of our volunteers deliver food to various homes about once every two months.

Assisted Living
Ministry

Each week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings we send out teams of volunteers to visit various apartments and assisted living housing units to minister to the elderly through Bible study.

Judea

Disaster Relief

Disaster relief training is offered throughout the year to equip individuals in our church to aid in various relief efforts in the event of a natural disaster such as a hurricane, flood, or tornado. These activities range from chaplaincy and counseling to construction. Mission teams are sent across our state and throughout the gulf coast to aid communities in recovery.

Samaria

Mississippi Gulf Coast

This is a student mission trip for all high school and college students ages 16 and older. This is a chance for students to literally have a life-changing experience. The cost is quite minimal, but the impact is eternal! It is an opportunity to participate in the Gulf Coast’s Mardi Gras parades riding on a Christian float. These parades take place on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in towns like Pass Christian, Ocean Springs and Gulfport and are not anything like the Louisiana parades. We stay at a Christian camp with a missionary and his family, which is a secure environment where we sleep, eat, and worship during this weekend trip. The whole purpose of our participation is to ride on Christian floats while handing out tracts and witnessing to the lost who line the parade routes.

Chadron, NE
This is a brand new trip currently being organized for this summer. We will be working with Grace Baptist Fellowship in Chadron doing Vacation Bible School and outreach projects. Click here to view updates about this year's trip on July 19-26, 2008.

Oneida, KY

A mission trip is organized each year for one week during the summer months to work with the Oneida Bible Institute (OBI). OBI is a Christian boarding school with students from across the country and around the world. Our mission teams take part in a variety of activities to assist the school including painting, coupon sorting, gardening, farm work, clothing ministry, and much more.

Ends of the Earth

Honduras

We send a team of about 40-50 individuals to the villages of Honduras for one week during the summer months each year. This opportunity was established through a partnership with Baptist Medical & Dental International and missionary friends of our church, Mark & Cindy Mayfield. Our teams run a medical clinic, distribute clothes, give away food, aid in construction, and participate in evangelism efforts to help spread the Gospel to the Honduran people. Many opportunities are available to assist in this mission endeavor. A link will be available soon to view updates on this year's trip on August 2-9, 2008.

Prayer/Pen Pals

This is a great opportunity for children to learn about missions. The names and contact information of missionary kids are available for children to write or email. Kids can get to know about what it's like to live on the mission field and learn to pray for these individuals specifically.

Opportunities to Give

At any time you feel the Lord is leading you to give, just fill out an offering envelope and designate your gift "Missions Fund". A missions campaign is promoted from December until April each year to raise money specifically for missions. One hundred percent of the funds raised in this campaign go to support the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for the International Mission Board, the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for the North American Mission Board, and the mission programs of Underwood Baptist Church. Donations to this fund may also be given in honor or memory of a loved one.
