- OBI was founded in 1899 by James Anderson Burns to educate children of families in eastern Kentucky.
- The Christian staff teach respect for authority, high moral standards, and responsible behavior.
- Built on a Biblical foundation, OBI prepares young people for life by equipping them in mind, body, and spirit.
- OBI is not a publicly funded school and depends on churches and individual groups for the majority of their funding.
- Due to their funding, they depend heavily on volunteer workers for construction, maintainence, cleaning, and farm work.
- Average enrollment is 350 with a staff of 150.
- Students perform nearly all the cleaning and groundskeeping duties on campus.
- Students tend livestock and bale hay on the 200 acre school-owned farm.
- Teens are taught to be on time, follow instructions, and to take pride in a job well done.
- The majority of students are not Christians when they enroll.
- Students attend daily chapel services and church services on Sunday mornings and evenings.
- Each year, many boys and girls come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
